Definition
NAP consistency means a law firm's Name, Address and Phone number appear exactly the same across its website, Google Business Profile, legal directories and other listings. Consistent NAP data helps Google trust that the business information is accurate.
Why it matters for law firms
Conflicting details, such as an old suite number or a tracking number on some listings and the main line on others, create uncertainty about where and who the firm is. This can weaken local rankings and send potential clients to a wrong number or old office.
Example
A family law firm moved offices two years ago, but Avvo, Justia and several directories still show the old address. After cleaning up those listings to match the new address, its map rankings in the new neighbourhood stabilise.
How to improve it
- Pick one official format for your firm name, address and phone number.
- Use that exact format in your website footer and contact page.
- Audit and correct legal directories such as Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Martindale.
- Use call tracking numbers carefully so the main number stays consistent on core listings.
