Definition
Call tracking uses unique phone numbers, often assigned dynamically on the website, to show which marketing source generated each phone call. For law firms, where most high-value enquiries arrive by phone, it is essential for measuring real results.
Why it matters for law firms
Without call tracking, a firm cannot tell whether SEO, PPC, LSAs or directories are producing clients. Set up carelessly, however, it can create NAP inconsistencies across listings and weaken local SEO.
Example
A criminal defense firm uses dynamic number insertion on its website so organic, paid and direct visitors see different numbers. Its Google Business Profile uses a tracking number as primary with the main line as an additional number.
How to improve it
- Use dynamic number insertion on the website.
- Keep your main number in the HTML for consistency.
- On GBP, add the main line as an additional phone number.
- Send call events into GA4 as key events.
