Definition
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how a law firm appears on Google Maps and in the Local Pack. It holds the firm's name, address, phone number, hours, categories, reviews, photos and services, and is one of the strongest factors in local rankings.
Why it matters for law firms
Google uses the profile to decide which firms to show for local searches and how prominently. The primary category matters most: a firm listed as 'Law firm' competes differently from one listed as 'Personal injury attorney'. Incomplete, unverified or suspended profiles lose local visibility almost entirely.
Example
An estate planning firm in Boston changes its primary category from 'Lawyer' to 'Estate planning attorney' and adds its probate and trust services. Within weeks it begins appearing for 'probate lawyer' searches it never showed for before.
How to improve it
- Choose the most specific primary category for your main practice area.
- Add secondary categories only for areas you actually practise.
- List each practice area as a service with a short description.
- Post updates and upload real photos of your office and attorneys.
