Definition
A topic cluster is a group of related pages built around one core subject: a central pillar page, usually a practice area page, supported by articles that answer specific questions and link back to it. The structure shows search engines depth of coverage on a topic.
Why it matters for law firms
A firm with one practice area page and nothing supporting it competes on a single page. A firm with a practice area page plus a dozen genuinely useful supporting guides demonstrates depth, earns more long-tail traffic and passes internal link value to the page that converts.
Example
A bankruptcy firm builds a Chapter 7 cluster: the Chapter 7 service page plus guides on the means test, exempt property, timelines and credit after bankruptcy. Each guide links back to the service page.
How to improve it
- Map each practice area to 8–15 real client questions.
- Write one focused article per question.
- Link every article to the pillar page with descriptive anchor text.
- Link the pillar page out to its supporting articles.
