Definition
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain-text Markdown file placed at a website's root that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and links to its most important pages. It is not an official Google standard, and major AI search engines have not confirmed relying on it.
Why it matters for law firms
It is low effort to add and may help some AI tools and agents understand a site more quickly. But it should not be sold as a ranking factor or a substitute for crawlable, high-quality content, which remains what AI search actually draws from.
Example
A personal injury firm adds an llms.txt listing its practice areas, office locations and top guides. It treats it as a small housekeeping step while focusing its GEO effort on content quality and mentions.
How to improve it
- Keep it short and accurate: firm summary, practice areas, key URLs.
- Update it when major pages change.
- Do not rely on it instead of good content and technical SEO.
- Make sure robots.txt does not block AI crawlers you want to allow.
