An LLM citation is when a large language model tool, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, names or links a website as a source or recommendation in its answer. For law firms, it can mean being cited for legal information or recommended as a firm to contact.
Why it matters for law firms
AI citations act like a new form of visibility and trust. A potential client who sees a firm recommended by an AI tool may go straight to the firm's website or search its name, which often shows up as direct or branded traffic rather than an obvious referral.

A bankruptcy firm notices a rise in branded searches and calls. In GA4 it also sees referral sessions from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai landing on its Chapter 7 guide, which is being cited in AI answers.
How to improve it

- Test prompts your clients might use and note which firms are cited.
- Strengthen content and mentions on the topics where competitors are cited.
- Keep your firm's key facts consistent everywhere.
