Definition
Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics that measure real-user page experience: Largest Contentful Paint (loading, good at 2.5 seconds or less), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness, good at 200 ms or less) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability, good at 0.1 or less).
Why it matters for law firms
Core Web Vitals are a minor ranking factor on their own, but slow and jumpy pages lose potential clients. Someone searching after an accident or arrest is usually on a phone and will leave a slow page and call the next firm.
Example
A workers' compensation firm's homepage loads a large autoplay video hero. Its mobile LCP is over 5 seconds. Replacing the video with a compressed image brings LCP under 2.5 seconds and reduces bounce on mobile.
How to improve it
- Compress and correctly size images; use modern formats such as WebP.
- Limit heavy scripts, chat widgets and third-party tags.
- Reserve space for images and embeds to prevent layout shift.
- Track field data in the Search Console Core Web Vitals report.
