Definition
A private blog network (PBN) is a group of websites, often built on expired domains, that exist mainly to link to other sites and manipulate rankings. Google's spam policies classify this as link spam, and sites relying on PBN links risk ranking drops or manual actions.
Why it matters for law firms
Legal SEO is competitive and lucrative, so some agencies sell PBN links as a shortcut. The results can look good for months and then collapse after a spam update, often leaving the firm with a damaged domain and a costly clean-up.

A firm's previous agency built hundreds of links from unrelated blogs with thin articles. After a spam update the firm's rankings fall sharply, and recovery requires removing links and rebuilding its link profile ethically.
How to improve it
- Ask any agency exactly where its links come from.
- Check linking sites for real audiences, real authors and topical relevance.
- Remove or disavow manipulative links if you have a manual action.
- Invest in earned links from real publications instead.
