What Is E-E-A-T?

Definition

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. It comes from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines and describes the qualities Google looks for in helpful content, with trust being the most important. It is a framework, not a single ranking score.

Why it matters for law firms

Legal topics affect people's rights, money and freedom, so Google applies higher standards to them. Content with no identifiable author, no credentials and no evidence of real practice experience struggles to compete with firms that show who wrote and reviewed it.

Example

A family law firm adds attorney bylines, 'reviewed by' notes, bar admission details and years of experience to its divorce guides. It also links each guide to the reviewing attorney's full bio page.

How to improve it

  • Add author or reviewer bylines linked to detailed attorney bios.
  • Show bar admissions, education, memberships and relevant experience.
  • Share first-hand insight from real cases, without confidential details.
  • Keep content accurate and show a last-updated date.
